Happy Mustang Day! Ford Mustang Day is observed every year worldwide on April 17th. The "Mustang" got its name from a World War II fighter plane called the "P-51 Mustang".
The first Mustang was introduced on April 17, 1964 at the World's Fair in New York. The night before it hit the sales floor, the Mustang was featured in commercials that ran on all major television networks. The sales pitch must have worked because Ford sold over 22,000 Mustangs on the first day! According to Ford, the Mustang was conceived as the "working man's Thunderbird".On their one year anniversary, April 17, 1965, Ford had sold over 418,000 Mustangs. Mustang clubs and groups began to spawn all over and would continue to grow and thrive in later years.
The year it debuted it was also featured in the James Bond movie "Goldfinger". Four years later, a green 1968 Mustang 390 GT was filmed in a car chase through San Francisco in the Steve McQueen movie “Bullitt”. To this day, Mustangs keep taking the big screen, featured in movies like 1974 and 2000's "Gone in 60 seconds", 1989's "Back to the Future II", 2003's "2 Fast 2 Furious" 2007's "I am Legend" and 2007's "Transformers".
