Driving During Tornado Season: What to do..

Updated: Mar 25, 2021

Weather can change in an instant. It doesn't wait for you to be indoors or until you have arrived at your destination. With warmer weather in the near future, many of us will be going on vacations and road trips, so we will be on the road more often. When bad weather hits while you're on the road, will you be prepared?

Tornado Season. "Tornado season" is the time of year the U.S. sees the most tornadoes. The peak “tornado season” for the Southern Plains is during May into early June. On the Gulf coast, it is earlier during the spring. In the northern plains and upper Midwest, tornado season is in June or July.

If you happen to be on the road when a Tornado Warning is issued, you hear the activated Tornado Sirens or there is a tornado sighting in your area, take the following steps:

  • The best option would be to get to a designated shelter, basement or safe room. But being on a road trip, we don't always have that option. NEVER try to outrun a tornado. Tornadoes can change direction quickly and can easily lift up a vehicle and toss it through the air.

  • Your next option is to immediately exit the vehicle in a safe manner and take shelter in a nearby building. DO NOT park under a bridge or overpass! The bridge design could cause a wind-tunnel effect increasing the wind speed underneath.

  • As a last resort, if you don't have time to get indoors or if there is no safe shelter nearby, lie flat in a ditch or culvert and be sure to stay away from any vehicles.

As always, be safe whether you're on the road or already at your destination. Check the weather ahead of time, and be sure to sign up for weather updates sent directly to your phone.
