Help! My Car is Overheating!

Updated: Jul 23, 2021

Here’s What You Should Do:

  1. Turn On Heat. You want to pull as much heat as possible away from the engine.

  2. Safely Pull Over. Always watch for traffic and find a clear spot off the roadway.

  3. Put Your Vehicle in PARK. Now that you have safely gotten off the roadway, you won't be driving for a while.

  4. Turn Off The Engine. In order to stop doing damage to your engine, you must turn it off.

  5. Pop Your Hood. This will help vent and allow more heat to escape under the hood.

  6. Call a Mobile Mechanic or a Tow. Continuing to drive will do more damage to your vehicle.

DO NOT:

  • Continue Driving.

  • Open Radiator Cap.

  • Throw Water On Your Engine

  • Try to Add Coolant.

Be sure to contact your mechanic ASAP.

Common Causes for Overheating:

  • Low Coolant

  • Leaks

  • Thermostat Stuck Open/Closed

  • Faulty Water Pump

  • Bad Temp Sensor
