Flat tires are very common and can happen any time. Even a brand new tire can go flat if it's punctured by a nail/screw or some other kind of debris in the roadway. Always be sure to check if your vehicle has a spare and make sure to inspect it during routine maintenance.
If you ever experience a flat tire while driving, don't panic! Safely steer your vehicle to the side of the road. Always be careful when changing a flat tire, if you cannot safely do so, please call someone who can help.
How to Change a Flat Tire
Park on a flat surface, put on emergency brake, and hazard lights, set out reflective triangle. Remove spare tire and jack from vehicle and lay items flat on ground.
Remove the hub cap and loosen lug nuts using the lug wrench. DO NOT REMOVE lugs nuts completely.
Place jack under vehicle at a sturdy part of the frame. See owner's manual for correct placement. Turn crank until it makes contact with underside of vehicle.
Continue cranking until the tire is high enough above the ground. DO NOT put your hands or legs under the vehicle; it could fall and injure you.
Finish removing the lug nuts, be sure not to lose any of them. Put them in your hubcap for safe keeping. Remove flat tire and lay flat so it doesn't roll away.
Line up spare tire with wheel studs and place on vehicle. Replace lug nuts and tighten by hand, then use lug wrench until you meet firm resistance.
Lower jack until wheel is on the ground. Finish tightening lug nuts. Use the star pattern ( shown in picture ).
Be sure to pick up and secure jack, triangle, and flat tire.
Drive slowly and as little as possible on your spare tire. Replace with a standard tire as soon as possible.
