Winter is coming! The most common emergency call we've had during the cold weather months is a jump start!
If your battery is over 3 years old, it may be time to replace it. However, a second most common problem is that it may also be your alternator. If you are having issues with your vehicle not starting, Contact Us! If you simply need a jump start to get you on your way, here's how to do it:
How to Jump Start a Vehicle:
Open the hoods on both vehicles, locate the battery or jump posts, get out jumper cables.
Locate the negative (-, black) and positive (+, red) posts on the jumper vehicle (the vehicle that is running).
Hold one side of the jumper cables apart (DO NOT let them touch). Take the other side of the cables and get ready to connect.
On the vehicle that is running (the jumper vehicle), connect the positive (+, red) cable to the positive (+, red) post. Then, connect the negative (-, black) cable to the negative (-, black) post.
Take the other end of the cables (remember to keep them apart) to the dead vehicle.
On the dead vehicle, connect the positive (+, red) cable and connect to the positive (+, red) post. Then connect the negative (-, black) cable to the negative (-, black) post.
There will be a spark when you are connecting the cables to the battery posts. Don't worry.
Wait about 5 min for the dead battery to pull a charge, then try to start the vehicle with the dead battery.
If the vehicle with the dead battery does not start, wait another 5-10 mins and try again.
Once the vehicle starts, disconnect the jumper cables from the second vehicle (the one that had the dead battery), but MAKE SURE TO KEEP THEM APART. DO NOT LET THE JUMPER CABLES TOUCH.
Disconnect the jumper cables from the jumper vehicle (the vehicle that was originally running) and store jumper cables in a safe place.
