Do you need new brakes? Here's a quick easy way to tell if you need to service your brakes.
Listen. Listen for squeaking, squealing or grinding when you are driving, especially when you are coming to a stop. These sounds can indicate you need new brakes. Most brake pads come with a "squealer", a small piece of metal designed to alert the driver (by squealing) when the brake pad is needing to be replaced.
Feel. When you apply pressure to your brake pedal, does it feel soft? Does it pulse? Or does it go straight to the floor? If you answered YES to any of these questions, your vehicle may not brake when you need it to. You should contact your mechanic immediately. Be sure to tell your mechanic what you are feeling so they can address these symptoms.
See. Look at your dash lights! Look for an illuminated Brake or ABS light on your dashboard. Inspect the rims on your tires for discoloration from brake dust. Check to see that your vehicle is not leaking brake fluid. Brake fluid is a clear or yellow to brown color, smells like fish oil and is oily and slick to the touch. If you have a brake fluid leak, your vehicle may not stop properly. You should contact your mechanic immediately.
Check. Check your records to verify the last time you had your brakes serviced. Your brakes should be checked and replaced, if needed, every 12 months or 12,000 miles.
