Road Trip with Pets: Survival 101

Updated: Apr 20, 2021

Road Trips can be fun, even more so when you get to bring your favorite furry friend along! Pets, just like people, have needs and require some extra attention along the way. Nevertheless, don't let this discourage you from bringing along man's best friend, he's family too! Here's a quick and easy guide to making it through the miles with your fur baby!

Before Heading Out

  • Always be sure your vehicle is up to par before heading out. Check out: How to: Get Ready to Road Trip

  • Make sure your destination is pet-friendly. The last thing you want is someone to have an allergy or a big posted NO PETS sign.

  • Check the weather- is your pet afraid of thunderstorms?

  • Stopping somewhere? Make reservations if possible!

What to Bring

  • A pet crate you can anchor to the seat (this is the safest way to travel with your pet)

  • Food and water for your pet

  • Treats, toys and a favorite blanket to keep your pet feeling comfortable

  • Any medications your pet may need

  • Portable litter box or doggy bags

While on the Road

  • Keep your pets in the backseat! An airbag deploys anywhere from 100 to 220 mph and may injure your pet.

  • Consider a crate for your pet to travel in-- this is the safest route when traveling with your pet. Cats usually don't like to travel, so a crate will help keep them comfy and confined.

  • If possible, don't travel solo! Share the driving and pet duties!

  • Stop frequently to stretch your legs and for bathroom breaks. Some Rest Stops have a gated pet area for your four legged friends to run around.

Overall, have fun! Your pet is family too, so keep them comfortable and enjoy the ride!
