Tips for Back to School Driving

Back to School affects ALL DRIVERS!

Here's a few tips on driving during your commute during the school year:

  • Plan Your Route. Do you live near or pass through a School Zone? Heavy traffic can be expected during the beginning and end of school days or school-related events. There will also be a lot more school buses stopping to pick up or drop off children.

  • Be Cautious. There will be many children walking to or from school or waiting for school buses. Pay attention to the road and be prepared for children

  • Reduce Your Speed. School Zones have reduced speed limits that come with hefty fines for violators. Having to reduce your speed will slightly cut into your time, so plan to leave a little earlier.

  • Fix Your Car. A longer wait time in traffic can be a serious issue if your vehicle has overheating problems. The constant stop and go can also put a lot of wear on your engine. Make sure you take care of these issues right away.

  • School Buses. When the STOP arm is out, you have to STOP. Many buses are now equipped with outside cameras. This is not to inconvenience you, it is for the safety of the children. There have been many children hit by passing cars and even more close calls.

  • Student Drivers. New road warriors are being trained! Try to be nice! Do you remember the first time you got behind the wheel?
