Tips for Driving to Thanksgiving Dinner and Keeping Your Sanity!

Updated: Oct 6, 2021

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it's time to start thinking about planning your route to the turkey dinner. Here is a list you can use to get ready for the big family gathering and a few tips on how to maintain your sanity before you get there!

Planning Your Route.

  • Repair It. If your vehicle needs repairs, don't wait; get it fixed before you go! The last thing you need is to get stuck on the highway with a flat or in the middle of nowhere with an overheating vehicle. It's better to get those repairs done now, rather than having to throw out more money later.

  • Road Closed. Check to see if there is construction or road closings in your area or along your route. This will help give you a better idea of what to expect for travel times and traffic.

  • Timing Traffic. Plan to leave early. Give yourself enough time to reach your destination, so you're not rushing out the door. There will be a lot of drivers on the road including regular drivers traveling to and from work, families driving to visit for the holiday and many people going to early Black Friday event sales. With all of these people on the road, traffic will be heavy in many areas.

Before You Head Out.

  • Fuel up the day before; don't wait until the last minute! If you haven't noticed, gas prices seem to spike around the holidays and on weekends. So fill up before the spike takes effect. Besides, you won't have to fight the crowd at the pump and your savings will give you something to talk about during dinner.

  • Food. Don't forget to bring a side dish or dessert! Make sure the dish you bring is ready to go, or will be by the time you leave!

  • Say Cheese! Get ready to make memories! Make sure you have your camera packed and ready to go or at least enough space on your phone to take pictures or videos.

  • Got kids? As a parent, we know kids can be a handful sometimes! Bring their favorite toys to keep them content during the drive and just in case not everyone wants to share at grandma's. Also, bring a few of their favorite snacks as backup (little bellies usually don't crave green bean casserole).

  • Breathe! Bring your sanity and enjoy yourself! We'll be here when you get back!
