The tires on your vehicle are like the shoes on your feet. You wouldn’t keep wearing your shoes if they had worn out soles or took your feet for a swim every time you stepped in a puddle... so then don’t keep driving on worn out tires that put you and everyone else on the road at risk!
Easy way to check your tire’s tread depth:
Also known as the "penny trick", super easy way to check if you need new tires.
Insert a penny into your tire's tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tread depth is less than 2/32 inch and it's time to replace your tires.
If your tire tread shows any uneven wear like the picture below, you need new tires and possibly some suspension work done on your vehicle.
If your tires show any bulging, cracking or uneven wear you must replace your tires ASAP. Driving around with severely worn tires puts everyone at risk. A worn or damaged tire can blow out causing you to lose control of your vehicle and crash.
Don't Forget to Check The Spare!
Hopefully you will not have to use your spare tire, but accidents do happen and it's better to know where your spare tire is located and if your spare tire is in good condition.
Some vehicles will have a donut, a smaller tire that is to be used sparingly (like the one shown in the picture located in the trunk). Other vehicles, usually trucks and SUV's, will have a full sized spare tire (shown under the vehicle). These can be used for a much longer period of time than a donut and are the same size as the other tires and rims on your vehicle.
Now that you know how to check the tread on your tires, grab a penny and check out your tires! When you are finished, check out How to Change a Flat Tire.
Always remember, NEW TIRES GO ON THE REAR!
