Must-Haves for your Summer Emergency Car Kit

Updated: Jan 6, 2021

Emergencies can happen at any time. Are you prepared?

Warmer weather means more time spent outside! Get ready for road trips, frying an egg on the sidewalk, vacations, and sticking to your leather seats! Here's a list of must-haves for your Summer Car Kit.

  • Get your vehicle ready for warmer months. Swap out those winter tires, get fluids changed and bring on the bubbles at the car wash!

  • At least One Gallon of Water. If you get stranded, you'll need to stay hydrated. Having a gallon of water will help keep you cool during scorching temperatures.

  • Cell Phone Charger. In an emergency you may need to call for help. Always be sure to have a cell phone charger in your vehicle just in case you need it. Because you don't know how long you will be stuck, use your phone as little as possible.

  • Jumper cables or a jump pack. In case you have a dead battery, you will need cables or a jump pack to get you back on the road.

  • High-Energy Snacks. Make sure you don't pack any goodies that will melt. Snacks like granola, nuts or dried fruit will be your go-to if you are stranded for hours. They come in handy for cranky restless children, too.

  • Sunscreen and Wide Brimmed Hat. Protect yourself from brutal sun!

  • Flashlight. Good for checking under the hood at night, or flagging down a tow truck.

  • First Aid Kit. In case anyone gets injured. (On the way to soccer practice, at the park, while changing flat, etc.)

  • Duct Tape. Can definitely be a lifesaver to get you further down the road. From taping up a torn hose to holding up a broken headlight.

  • Small Tool Kit and Pocket Knife. A simple kit with a couple screwdrivers, a small hammer, pliers and a pocket knife will come in handy.

  • Rags and Gloves. Engines can be HOT! Be careful when checking under the hood or moving broken metal or glass.

  • Jack & Lug Wrench. Be sure to have a spare tire handy, too!

  • Flares or Reflective Triangle. Be safe, be seen. If your battery is completely dead, you won't be able to use your hazard lights. A flare or reflective triangle can help other drivers see you.

  • Blanket. You may not need it to keep warm, but you could hang it up and use it to stay cool in the shade.

  • Tire Gauge and Tire Sealant. While we don't personally recommend tire sealant, in an emergency you just might need it. Tire sealant will hold for a little while, but you will need to replace that tire as soon as possible.
