National Odometer Day: General Maintenance

Having a General Maintenance Schedule is a crucial part of owning a vehicle. Regular scheduled maintenance really can help you save money! While this is only a general schedule, check your owners manual for a schedule better fit to your vehicle. Most owners manuals have a maintenance schedule toward the back of the book which gives you a specific mileage for when certain maintenance should be done.


Check Monthly

  • Check engine light (is it on?)

  • Clean interior and exterior

  • All exterior lights (signals, headlights, hazards)

  • Tires (uneven wear, dry rotting cracking, low tread)

  • Fluids (power steering, brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, wiper fluid)


Every 3,000 miles (3 months)

  • Engine Light (is it on?)

  • Change your oil and oil filter.

  • Check all fluids (power steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant, transmissions fluid,wiper fluid).

  • Inspect your wipers (are they broken, streaking, missing spots).

  • Inspect your tires (look for uneven wear, dry rotting, cracking, low tread).

  • Check all exterior lights (signals, headlights, hazards).


Every 6,000 to 9,000 miles (6 months to 9 months)

  • Inspect and replace your air filter and cabin air filter (if you are a smoker or live in a dusty area)

  • Inspect exhaust

  • Change oil and oil filter

  • Check suspension components

  • Inspect your wipers

  • Check all exterior lights, replace if needed

  • Inspect your tires

  • Engine light (is it on?)


Every 12,000 to 18,000 miles (1 year to 1.5 years)

  • Inspect and replace brake pads, if needed (12,000 miles)

  • Replace your air filter and cabin air filter

  • Check and test your coolant.

  • Inspect your suspension components

  • Rotate your tires

  • Inspect your battery (corrosion, loose cables, check date on battery).

  • Inspect hoses and wires

  • Engine light (is it on?)


Every 24,000 to 30,000 miles (2 years to 2.5 years)

  • Change coolant (24,000 to 36,000 miles)

  • Replace your fuel filter.

  • Inspect suspension components.

  • Engine light (is it on?)

  • Change brake fluid (24,000 miles)

  • Inspect spark plugs, get a tune-up if needed

  • Inspect tires, be sure to insect spare tire.

  • Check belts for fraying, cracking
